Update - March 2022

Hello and thank you for subscribing to our newsletter!

We are sharing a quick update on the behind the scenes work accomplished thus far:
  • We’ve incorporated as a non-profit and our 501(c)(3) tax exemption is pending.
  • We’ve created a board of directors with a broad base of expertise, community leadership, and passion for Chelsea.
  • Our lawyers are hammering out the final details of the purchase agreement with Magellan.
  • Our team is working with Washtenaw County Brownfield Authority to plan and fund the initial environmental testing.
  • We are working closely with the Cty of Chelsea to explore a partnership for this project.
  • We are developing strategic partnerships with 5 Healthy Towns, Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Chelsea Senior Center, Silver Maples Retirement Center, Chelsea Rotary, Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce, Chelsea Downtown Development Authority, Washtenaw County, Chelsea District Library, local schools and nonprofits.
  • 25% of total funding is committed! These funds will strengthen future grant requests and have already put us on a stong path for success.
  • Our team wants to honor the history of the site in its transformation. We have created a logo inspired by the Federal Screw Works Logo.
  • The project timeline can be viewed on the website at this link.
Who We Are: Board Spotlight

Our board members all have unique perspectives on why they decided to get involved and volunteer their time to the Main Street Park project. MSPA’s Eleven Board Members:

Who We Are: Project Principals

Main Street Park project principals Abby Hurst & Joe Ziolkowski are experienced developers. They purchased and redeveloped abandoned buildings, the old police station, and the former Mack Building, which now house various locally owned businesses, including Agricole Farm Stop. Both projects have contributed to the local economy by providing occupancy for five businesses and eight residential units. In addition, Agricole Farm Stop has generated $2 million of revenue back to the local agriculture, food, and artisan economy.

What is a P3, PPP, Public Private Partnership?

Main Street Park Alliance plans to redevelop the Federal Screw Works brownfield property into the Main Street Park utilizing a form of infrastructure project development known as a Public Private Partnership (P3). P3s encompass building schools, non-administrative government buildings, bridges, roads, and parks. They offer unique development and financial innovations to improve cities organizationally and culturally.

Two recent local examples of successful P3s are the Ann Arbor Skatepark located at Veterans Park in Ann Arbor, and the  B2B Trail.  To learn more about Public Private Partnerships, click on these links:  Anatomy of Brownfield Redevelopment, Turning Brownfields into Parks, Reclaiming Brownfields

The private sector designs and builds the infrastructure assets, arranges financing, and can own and operate or transfer the asset to the public sector to own and operate. Our hope is to transfer the ownership to the City of Chelsea to be maintained as a public gathering space for generations to come. Please let City Council members know of your support for this initiative. Click here for City Council contact information. When executed and implemented successfully, Public Private Partnerships are a true catalyst for economic growth and sustainable development.

The Main Street Park project is for the community by the community!
